KUALA LUMPUR: A group of about 30 people gathered outside the main entrance of KLCC today on a peaceful protest by having hunger strike to commemorate the mega protest which took place on 25th November 2007 and at the same time to remind the government on Hindraf’s 18 points of demand. There were a few police officers on guard in case the protest goes away.
Hindraf’s supporters started to gather at KLCC around eight in the morning starting from yesterday till in the evening on the 24th and then came back today. The hunger strike is made to be an annual event since 2007. A memorandum was sent to the Prime Minister’s office in Putrajaya in the morning and the memorandum was accepted by the Prime Minister’s secretary.
After the hunger strike at three in the afternoon, they would head to Batu Caves for a special ceremony. Those who came for the protests were hardcore supporters and mostly were business person and those who have their own
business.
A few of the Hindraf’s 18 points of demands includes beautifying Tamil schools and to be funded by the government, the government should stop demolishing of Temples, Burial Grounds and grant state land for all such need and also to put an end to the ongoing violations of the Malaysian Constitution. Most of the demands revolves around the rights for the Indian community, education, eradicating poverty among the Indians and eliminate racial discriminations showed towards the Indian community in the country.
According to one of the supporters, so far ten percent of the objectives were met. The supporter praised the Prime minister for his good work in meeting some of the points of demand so far. At the same time, the supporter also said that the hunger strike will continue annually until all the demands are met.
