Laptop may ‘toast’ your skin

Placing laptop on your lap for hours can damage your skin permanently, a new research has stated.

Laptop is a very common and essential tool for us in our daily lives today. We often see people balance laptop on their lap and started doing their work by using it maybe for a long time period. However, they do not notice that the heat released from the laptop is slowly damaging their skin and bring harm to their health.

The Swiss study found that placing the devices next to skin for long periods of time can lead to “toasted skin syndrome” - a red and brown, net like pattern on the skin caused by frequent and prolonged low level heating.

In the past, "toasted skin syndrome" has occurred in workers whose jobs require being close to a heat source, including bakers and glass blowers, and, before central heating, in people who huddled near potbellied stoves to stay warm.

According to Lead researcher Dr Yefim Sheynkin, from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, said: “Laptops can reach internal operating temperatures of over 70°C.” This clearly shows that the temperature is very high and it is not surprise that the skin will be ‘toast’. Citing a case-study, the researchers said a 12-year-old boy developed a sponge-patterned skin discoloration on his left thigh after playing computer games a few hours daily for several months.

“Toasted skin syndrome” will seriously damage our skin surface. In this case, it does not only affect our appearance, at the same time it would easily lead to skin cancer as well.

Other than that, a reminder to men to be more aware and avoid this habit of placing the laptop on your lap. A medical report found that heat from laptop may increase the temperature of the scrotum and hence it will affect and decrease the production of sperm which can potentially lead to infertility.

The proper way to use laptop is placing it on the desktop or use a lap desk to avoid direct contact with your skin and minimize your risk. It is always better than placing it on your lap.
